Take an old double breasted suit (with matching trousers).
Many are available in good will thrift stores.

Attach them to the body of the jacket.
Change the buttons to be more period correct.
A distinguished and inexpensive period fashion piece can be created within a few hours at very little cost.

In this example, Butterick Pattern 3648 was used as a guide.
The total time for completion was 4 hours.
